|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Established in 1906 by the Reverend Sokyo Ueoka, the Mantokuji Mission is a striking Zen Buddhist temple that stands just outside the quiet little seaside town of Paia. Its graveyard is equally beautiful: The cemetery holds over 600 markers, around 200 of which are in English. The diversity of styles common with Asian graveyards is well showcased here, from uncarved small rocks to large, beautifully-crafted granite headstones. Towards the back near the beach rests a large pile of stacked gravestones, possibly displaced by a tidal wave that struck Paia in 1946. Visitors are welcome.
