The town started this cemetery in 1854 to replace the former cemetery located in town. The earliest burials with existing headstones are Velera Morgan and Dr PA Bowman who died in 1855. The remains from the former cemetery were also reinterred here.
Two famous people are buried here, US Senator James T Farley and US House of Representatives and US Commissioner General of Immigration Anthony Caminetti, who was also the first native Californian elected to Congress. Unfortunately, none of their headstones exist today.
Jackson was founded as a mining town and many of the earlier graves are miners who met an unfortunate demise. None was more tragic than the 47 who lost their lives in the Argonaut Mine Fire in 1922. There is a mass grave in both cemeteries where they were laid next to each other. A plaque commemorates the disaster. Nine of the miners are buried here.
The original cemetery is the Historic Section on the hill. As the city population grew, the city added more property to the cemetery. On the south end was the former location of the Chinese Cemetery, now under a service yard for the nearby school. The bodies were removed and sent back to China many years ago. Near the center of the cemetery is a baby section highlighted by a plaque. Across Cemetery Lane is a section that surrounds the old Jackson Jewish Cemetery.
There are a large number of unmarked pauper graves, largely from people who died at the County Hospital, were unknown, or did not have any known relatives.
Other notables include DB Spagnoli, US Consul to Italy, and Tina Kane, the first Grand President of the Native Daughters of the Golden West.
This cemetery is still in use today.
