Bexley Heath Cemetery was founded by the Bexley Burial Board in 1876 and opened in 1879 to serve the nearby Christ Church Bexleyheath, which was built between 1872 and 1877. Although there are Parish records for Christ Church, the burials actually took place in Bexleyheath Cemetery since there is no Churchyard surrounding Christ Church.
It is important not to confuse Christ Church Bexleyheath, with the now defunct Christchurch Chapel of Ease which served the local congregation between 1842 and 1877. The Chapel did have its own Churchyard but this was full and closed to new burials by 1882. However, some new burials are noted in the Bexleyheath Cemetery records as taking place in the Chapel's Churchyard and are presumed to be reopening of existing family graves.
There are an estimated 20,000+ burials including 62 Commonwealth War Graves and some 200 graves of Civilians killed by enemy action during the Second World War. There is a small but attractive chapel with surrounding flower beds and a number of semi-mature trees within the grounds. The sites includes the original "Old Plot", a Roman Catholic area and later areas notated A to F.
