John Skinner also held services for the dead in the Mayberry murder tragedy in 1885. These bodies were moved to the Angus Cemetery in 1930, when the Bonito Lake dam construction began.
The first ground of the cemetery was donated by Porter Gould Peters who was known as P. G. Peters (no relation to LaMoyne).
An early deed shows that P. G. and Cora Peters also donated ground to the community for the Angus School House. One of the Hagee boys attended school here in 1906, and Opal Peters attended school here in 1923 when she was 4 years old. The Angus Cemetery Association leased this property for a while from the Lincoln County Board of Education. In 1944, a Quitclaim Deed shows that this property was given to the Angus Cemetery by the Capitan School Board of Education, after an earlier consolidation of the Angus School. In 1961, an additional tract of land was bought from Boyd and Lena May Lucas. Then in 2000, The New Mexico District Church of the Nazarene gave approximately 1.5 acres to the cemetery.
The Angus Cemetery has been in existence for more than 135 years serving many families of the Angus community, and has maintained the policy that only those living and dying in the community or descendants of those already buried in the cemetery are eligible for burial sites.
In November of 2013, the association board filed and received Non-Profit status from the IRS, and obtained an EIN. We do not qualify for tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) guidelines and therefore donations are not tax deductible.
Each year there is an organized workday planned for the first Saturday in May for general cleaning and upkeep of the grounds and the schoolhouse. Later in May, the Sunday before Memorial Day, a memorial service is held in the schoolhouse. Following the service, a delicious POT-LUCK meal is enjoyed by all attending and the Annual Angus Cemetery Association business meeting is held.
