The Dix Hill Cemetery is believe to be the first black cemetery in Haywood County and was used exclusively by members of that race since the early 1800's. Most of the graves are unmarked or have rocks in place of a headstone. It is estimated that there are over one thousand graves located here an it is reasonable to assume that almost all of the black population of our community who died in Haywood County are buried in this cemetery. Dix Hill Cemetery is maintained by the Town of Waynesville and information concerning those buried here may be obtained though the Town Hall or records on file in the Haywood County Courthouse as well as from records maintained by the various black churches of the community which are located relatively near the cemetery.
To reach this cemetery turn left off of Main Street onto Pigeon Street (Hwy. 276) and travel 7/10 of a mile turn sharply right and the cemetery is located on top of the hill. The road is paved and runs completely around the cemetery, but the climb to the to of the crest of the hill is quite difficult. There is no cemetery sign but the headstones are visible.
