Named for the founders, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the first of the "fraternal benefit societies" that gave mutual social and financial support after the American civil war.
The Oregon burial guide reports: "Perhaps no rural area in Oregon is so abundantly supplied with cemetery acreage as is Alford", with four cemeteries on this half-mile stretch of Powerline road, including the Alford, IOOF and Masonic cemeteries.
