|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Our City Cemetery is located in Sec. 24 of Kellogg Township, Jasper County, Iowa. It is on the Northeast edge of Kellogg on Highway 224.
The cemetery was actually started about 1858 and was then known as Jasper City Cemetery. The warranty deed on record in the Jasper County Recorders office is dated Oct. 20, 1870. It is from Levi G. Paine and his wife Lucy A. Paine to the Jasper City Cemetery Association for the sum of $200.00.
By June 10, 1890 the need for an addition to the cemetery prompted a purchase from A. B. Craven and his wife Nettie Craven, to the Jasper City Cemetery Association. For the sum of $10.00 more land was acquired. On June 2, 1897 the deed was transferred from Jasper City Cemetery Association to the Ladies Cemetery Association.
There seems to be no record of when the name was changed from Jasper City Cemetery to Our Silent City Cemetery.
On Nov. 7, 1932 another acre and one half was added to the existing grounds. This was the Kellogg Cemetery Association from Simon Anderson and his wife Allie A. Anderson. By now the price had risen to $500.00 and 2 cemetery lots. The Ladies Cemetery Association filed the articles of incorporation March 29, 1947.
This parcel of land has been well maintained over the years. It is fenced, has a veterans memorial and a flag pole. One can drive in on paved roads, created in 1989, and appreciate work well done by the Kellogg Ladies Cemetery Association.
The first plat of Jasper City Cemetery is dated Dec. 6, 1870. This is only the first portion of what has become a large cemetery containing 9 acres.
The rows run north to south by section, with section 1 starting in the Northwest corner.
