The Memorial Garden was established in 1989 and is in a sheltered area at the back of the church. The center square surrounded by shrubbery contains ashes of those who have passed on, with their names inscribed on plaques hung on the building.
Following in the tradition of John Wesley's circuit riders, Methodism began in the Glenview area at the home of William Reed in Oak Glen, as Glenview was called in the beginning. The farmhouse was located at 1446 Waukegan Road, about a block north of Lake. It is the site of the Carillon Square Shopping Center today. Dr. E. A. McCormack also opened his home to the Methodists. He lived in rooms in the Rugen Store, later Bess Hardware, on the northwest corner of Glenview Road and Pine Street. In 1860, the Reverend O. Huse was assigned by the Methodist Church Rock River Conference to the Northfield Circuit, which included today's villages of Northfield, Niles, Golf and Glenview. He was the first of 58 pastors who have served Glenview. No pastor was assigned to serve Oak Glen during the Civil War so the faithful were served by James Cartwright as a circuit rider and by students of the Garret Biblical Institute, now Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston. In 1885 Mrs. Sarah Hutchings donated the site for a building, located on Church Street. The church was referred to as The Little White Church but officially was called the Oak Glen Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1899, the village of Glenview was incorporated and the name was changed to Glenview Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1949 its name changed again to First Methodist Church of Glenview. In 1950 the congregation purchased a property on Harlem Avenue and, after years of fund raising and labor, the new building was finished in June 1953. It has since been improved and enlarged to accommodate the large number of activities and services the church provides. In the 1970s, with changes in the structure of the Methodist Church, the congregation became known as Glenview United Methodist Church. In 1978 it opened its doors to the Galilee Korean United Methodist Church.
