Koskela Cemetery, AKA: Jacobson Cemetery or Salmela Cemetery
This is a small, abandoned cemetery, located in the center of Section 2 of Spruce Grove Township in Becker County, Minnesota. Approx 1 1/2 miles EES of the town of Wolf Lake.
Directions from Wolf Lake: Follow Hwy 40, two miles East to 520 Avenue. Turn right (South) on 520 Ave (gravel) 1/2 miles to farmstead on right side (West) of road. Since this cemetery is on private property, it is advisable to ask permission of the current resident/owner. As of 9/1/08, this property was for sale.
Directions from farmstead to cemetery: There is an approach approx. 150 yards North of the farmstead driveway, which goes into a field/pasture. From this approach, go straight West (across the field/pasture) 1/2 mile, to the fenced tree line, which is on the West side of this field and runs North and South. The cemetery is in the tree line, approx 200 yards North of the Southern fenceline of this field.
The plots are spread over an area of approx 50 yards, in the trees. Only a few of the existing gravestones are visible from the field.
About 20 - 30 burials including Koskela, Haataja, Jacobson and Salmela family members, in a wooded area on Duane Salman's land (Dec. 2001). Last burial occurred about early 1980's. Spruce Grove Township 1889-1989, page for "The Peter Koskela Family" lists the "Koskelas dedicate a plot on the west edge of their farm for a cemetery."
