Cemetery notes and/or description:
On July 23, 1883, 27 acres of land was given by a gift Deed to Riverside Cemetery Corporation by Jerre Hacker and his wife, residents of Fort Fairfield, Maine. The first body buried in the cemetery was Almon S. Richards on July 2, 1884. By May 24, 1905, there were approximately 1000 people buried in the cemetery and about 900 had stones and monuments. At that time, the vault was in place, also a large fountain with water piped from across the river. (The water pipes were redone in 1920.) A circular area of about 100 feet in diameter was set aside awaiting the erection of a soldiers' monument. When the cemetery was built, local residents were encouraged to move their loved ones from the outlaying burial grounds (usually on the home farm or nearby) to the new cemetery. This will explain the notation "buried upon removal" which frequently appears in the early cemetery records. Also, when a body was removed from the "Old Cemetery", this refers to Old Riverside Cemetery, also known as Houghton Burial Ground. Kimball C. Haycock was the undertaker for most, if not all, of the period from 1884 to 1925. He died October 1925 at age 81 and his burial is the last entry in the early handwritten records. The cemetery is located on East Riverside Avenue and not far from the Old Riverside Cemetery which is on West Riverside Avenue.
