|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Howard Cemetery was located in the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 26, Township 1 south, Range 1 east in Madison County, Alabama. That translates roughly to the west side of Butler Road at its intersection with Walker Lane. In 1978, it was "in a row of trees on the north side of Walker Lane." As late as 1999 it was still discernable as a clearly demarkated jumble of brush in an otherwise cleared field to the north of the road. Now (October 2009) it appears to have been paved over by the parking lot of a factory building. It is doubtful any remains were relocated to another cemetery.
Dorothy Johnson, in Cemeteries of Madison County, Alabama, (Huntsville, AL, USA: Johnson Historical Publications, 1978) Vol. II, p. 90, says, "There are no stones in this cemetery, and I do not know who is buried here. I was told by a neighbor that it was the "old Howard Cemetery" but they could give me no further information. It does, however, have a rather interesting history. A small plane crashed in it a few years ago and at one time bank robbers, being chased by the sheriff, tossed a bag of money in the cemetery; the money was recovered."
