The Schara Tzedeck Cemetery in New Westminster is a private Jewish cemetery dating back to the 1920s, established by the Schara Tzedeck Synagogue, the oldest and largest Orthodox Synagogue in Vancouver. The cemetery was consecrated on November 3, 1929. It is located on a sloping hill at the western edge of New Westminster, just a short walk from the 22nd Station Skytrain stop, and it has an outstanding view of the Fraser River and surrounding region, from Burnaby to Richmond to Annacis Island to North Delta and Surrey. The Schara Tzedeck Cemetery is operated by the Schara Tzedeck Cemetery Board, and note they also operate a newer cemetery in Surrey, BC with the same name. Provided you are Jewish, you can be buried at one of the Schara Tzedeck Cemeteries; you do not specifically need to be a member of the Schara Tzedeck Synagogue. A large map with plot locations is hanging in the hallway of the cemetery administration building. The Cemetery Board is also involved with the City of Vancouver in overseeing the Jewish area at Mountain View Cemetery, which is owned and operated by the City.
