The land on which Spring Grove Cemetery is located was owned by Stephen Page, who first opened it up to the public for burials in 1845. In 1867, the Association of Spring Grove Cemetery was established. In 1904, a portion of land was set aside for the sale of lots for African Americans. The cemetery also contains 360 Civil War veterans. The cemetery was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 and the gate to the cemetery is locked at night. There is some misleading data in regard to burials here as the Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions by Charles Hale & his co-workers during the 1930's as a WPA project, lists many people who died well before this cemetery was established in 1845. However, that can be explained by the many large family monuments within the grounds, where the ancestry of a family was inscribed, going back to the 1600's. So although the names of people with deaths before 1845 were inscribed on the monument and listed in the Hale Collection, they were not buried in Spring Grove Cemetery.
