Cemetery notes and/or description:
Historically there are 2 separate cemeteries dating back to 1854 within the same boundary. Although a joint venture was set up in 2004 they are still operated as 2 separate cemeteries as the land is owned by both Camden and Islington in approximately 4 tranches. Islington owns the left hand side with Islington Chapel in it as well as the part with the Crematorium. The Commonwealth Wargraves Commission still regard St Pancras and Islington as separate and although both cemeteries have the same postcode and share common entrance gates, for the purposes of Findagrave, we will keep these separate. At 190 acres, these burial sites are the largest in the UK. They are managed by Islington and Camden Cemetery Services (ICCS) which is a joint service set up in June 2004 by the London Boroughs of Islington and Camden. The site plan shows which parts of the site are Islington and which are St Pancras. Islington Cemetery contains 344 First World War graves and 265 from the Second World War, all scattered throughout the cemetery. A screen wall in the western part bears the names of those whose graves could not be marked individually, together with the names of two casualties from the Second World War whose remains were cremated at Islington Crematorium. The names of six First World War casualties buried in Islington Cemetery but who could not be commemorated there are included on a special memorial in adjacent St Pancras Cemetery. Total number of identified service casualties: 612. See also Islington Civilian War Dead for records of Islington's World War Two Civilian casualties, some of whom may be buried in this cemetery. Islington Crematorium is set within the tranquil grounds of Islington Cemetery. The crematorium is a 30 minute walk from the main entrance in the High Road but the cemetery provides a minibus service throughout both cemeteries. There is ample space for car-parking throughout the cemetery. The crematorium chapel opened in 1937. It has Art Deco detailing and a distinctive glass dome. The chapel is available for funeral services of all faiths and beliefs so there are no fixed religious symbols. Either side of the crematorium building are areas where cremated remains can be laid to rest. As at April 2013, the interment count is greatly distorted as it includes more than 900 WWII Civilian War Dead, not one of whom is known to be buried in this cemetery.
