On a warm spring afternoon Robert and Lana (Davis) Kirk were returning home from the country store at 201st and South Elwood. They passed a small meadow brimming with wild flowers near the Duck Creek School. As they slowly proceeded Lana remarked that when she died she wanted to be buried in that prairie garden. True to her wish Robert laid her to rest in that prairie garden in 1911 at the young age of 36. Robert Kirk dedicated five acres of that property as a local cemetery where anyone in the community could be buried.
Robert named the cemetery Prairie Garden and erected a sign over the entry. Years later the sign was in disrepair and illegible. A workman was hired to erect a new sign with metal letters that would more durable. It was to read Prairie Garden Cemetery. The workman was left on his own, hard at work. When the sign was erected it said, DUCK CREEK. When asked why? The workman stated that for the life of him he could not remember how to spell prairie. So, the Prairie Garden Cemetery became the Duck Creek Cemetery to many. Over the years even the metal sign has disappeared, but the name Duck Creek Cemetery persists.
