This is a town-owned cemetery. It originally was part of the Russell family property along Old Fall River Road. In 1935 the Russell heirs deeded the cemetery to the town of Dartmouth, including all unsold lots (the Russell family had been selling plots to neighbors). Town Meetings minutes indicate that the walls, gate, roadway, and well were improvements ,made by the town after 1940.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as DAR818.
