|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery is near the Pine Hill Church but has no real connection to the church. Both have served the needs of the local Afro-American population for over a century. It is located in the northwest quadrant of Red River County, Texas. From Woodland take FM 410 north for 4.1 miles to Kanawha and the intersection with CR 2372. Take CR 2372 west and about 2.5 miles down this sandy road the church is on the left. The cemetery is just past the church, across the road and 4/10 mile north into the woods. A deed dated 22 Oct 1906 and filed for record on 16 Apr 1907 in Book CH Vol 59 Page 231 for a tract on the Elisha Simmons survey from Cora C. Perot to Pine Hill Baptist Church. The oldest marked grave is that of Jane Mims who died on 11 Mar 1889. This cemetery was surveyed by Lawrence and Sue Dale on 16 Feb 1997. We visited the site again on 8 Dec 2003 and took the GPS readings. We also did a re-walk of the cemetery adding new burials and noting marker changes. While there found the grave of an old friend, Cowboy Johnson, and had a nice conversation with him beneath his beloved pine trees. As of 31 Dec 2004 this cemetery had 207 documented burials.
