From the Hawkeye Heritage journal of the Iowa Genealogical Society, July 1976 issue:
William Findley purchased land in East Township, Section 14, 31 May 1853 and there is no record of when an acre of this land was set aside for a burial ground but when the land passed out of the Findley family 25 Oct 1893, the deed included the following exception: Except one acre...being used for cemetery purposes...
No official records were kept, but in the early 1930s Winfield Scott Findley made a plat map showing all burials. He carried rocks from the river to mark the graves which did not have stones, recording these sites only by family name... Iron crosses were placed to mark the graves formerly identified by the rocks.
