When the Moore Dam was built, two cemeteries in Waterford, Vt and one in Pattenville, NH were to be flooded and were moved. The Pattenville cemetery was adjoined to the West Littleton Cemetery in NH in 1953; a new cemetery, Riverside, was created just downstream of the dam, and the Upper Waterford and Pike Cemeteries were moved there.
The layout of these two cemeteries was reportedly to be maintained in laying out the new Riverside Cemetery. However, this was not quite adhered to in the case of the Upper Cemetery, and apparently not actually intended in the case of the Pike Cemetery -- as not only was the original layout of the cemetery as a whole not followed in any manner, but also, plots within the lots (even when consisting of multiple rows) were laid out for optimal use of space, and all open space eliminated in the new "Pike" area of Riverside.
At the rear of the "Pike" area are 9 small, modern flat gray-granite markers provided by the N.E. Power Company when the Cemeteries were moved. These graves had no markers and the fact that there had been a body buried there was recognized by a dark streak of organic material in the ground. This soil was removed to the new location. But, I have not yet found documentation recording whether they were found in the Pike, Upper, or some in each, cemetery. The lot blueprints made in 1953 only record "burials of record" and note that "unrecorded burial locations are unknown". Research continues.
In the case of the Old Upper Cemetery, it was on the north side of the road and the new Riverside Cemetery is on the south side; so the cemetery was rotated 180 degrees in order to keep the preferred front row lots next to the road; whether or not the individual coffins were also rotated (in order that the deceased will still be facing east on resurrection day) is unknown.
