This is a large burial ground with many unmarked graves. Also called Old Wesley Cemetery. (from JKT Smith book)
Town of Wesley, named for John Wesley, was laid off NW of its Methodist Church in 1829 on Samuel Ashe property. Samuel Ash was a son and grandson of NC Governors. The town was moved and renamed Stanton for Joseph R. Stanton with the coming of the railroad in the 1850's. The cemetery remains with settlers buried in the east part and their slaves in the west.
From WPA cemetery survey (20 Apr 1939): Name: Wesley Graveyard (Colored) Location: 1 mile N.W. of Stanton on Covington road. Stanton is 12 miles W. of Brownsville, Tenn. Established 60 years ago by Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Colored); in use 500 graves; 3 Acres; very well kept. This cemetery was a white one until about 50 years ago, when the white citizens moved into Stanton, establishing the Stanton Cemetery.
