The earliest grave is dated 1978 in this cemetery.
The Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart came to America from Italy in 1865 to answer the call for religious multilingual educators to work with the growing number of immigrant children in New York. From these original three Sisters, both the needs of the community and the numbers of the Sisters grew up apace. Over the next one hundred years the Order founded, staffed and operated fifty one elementary schools, ten high schools, one college, seven business schools, seven day nurseries, four child care institutions, and four adult day care centers.
Largest of these, and perhaps best known, was Saint Joseph's Home for Children in Peekskill, New York. Founded in 1879, Saint Joseph's staff of Sisters nurtured, educated, and gave loving care to over one thousand boys and girls per year. The orphanage and school have been closed for many years, and the convent houses a retirement villa and infirmary for the sisters.
Most of the buildings are still there. The girls building is there and used by the nuns for retreat. The boys building was across from it and was torn down for the Riverbend condos.
The original chapel is there and the business offices. The Franciscan nuns are still there and you can go visit them and learn the history of St. Joseph's boys and girls home. The files of the orphans are on microfiche in the basement.
