|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Omph-Ghent is one of the northern townships of Madison County that received its name from the church that stood near the residence of David Swett, the original pioneer settler of the area.
Omphghent Burying Ground (formerly Omph-Ghent) is a pioneer cemetery on private ground. I would estimate that the cemetery now contains about 50 gravestones (Feb. 2009). I was told that most of these stones are illegible, but I didn't find that to be the case. Many of them are quite clearly legible.
The cemetery can be accessed from Sherry Creek Rd. Go about .1 mile east from Prairietown Rd. on Sherry Rd. On the right you will see a long, straight driveway (it looks like a dirt road), heading south. I left my car on Sherry Creek Rd. and walked up the driveway. At the end of the driveway is a house on the right and a small pond on the left. Walk around the pond and continue south for a short way. Look for a cattle gate--that's the entrance to the cemetery.
