Middleton Friends Cemetery
Middleton, Columbiana County, Ohio, USA
Middleton Friends Cemetery is listed in the Columbiana county book of cemeteries.
The cemetery was read in Oct 13, 1974 by Carol Bell & Floyd Sidwell.
The book says that it is located in section 26, on Kirk Road, about 1/2 mile south of Crestview Road. It is on the East side of the road, up a hill, not visible from the road. Note that it is located on the same ground as the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Middleton. The 2 cemeteries are separated by a small pathway. The Friends cemetery is on the site of the first log meeting house of Middleton Friends, and there are a lot of burials sites at the back of the lot which were only marked with rough fieldstones with no engravings or only initials. These oldest stones all appear to be gone now. All visible stones were copied in random order. The Bicentennial History of Columbiana (p55) states that in the summer of 1803 a delegation was appointed by the Red Stone Quarterly Meeting in PA. to organize the Middleton Monthly Meeting of the Society of Orthodox Friends. The 1870 Atlas shows a cemetery on that site.
Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy vol.iv was also consulted and when possible, dates and data have been added.
