Add PhotosThe city of Mylapore (Thirumayilai), is home to the Roman Catholic San Thome Basilica, Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Sri Ramakrisha Mutt, Sai Baba Temple, and a number of other important religious sites. Located near Triplicane, it's part of South Chennai (Madras), and had an established trade with the Romans, as it's recorded by Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD.
In 1749, the British East India Company took possession of the town which was then occupied by the Portugese, who had built a church on the site where, according to Indian tradition, St. Thomas was martyred. In 1893, San Thome church was rebuilt by the British as a cathedral.
In the 1864 'Report on the Administration of the Madras Presidency During the Year 1862-1863,' it was stated "An eligible site has been found for a Cemetery for the Christian inhabitants of Mylapore. It is situated on Quibble Island, and has been acquired at a cost of Rupees 1,202-6, which together with that of raising and enclosing the ground, Rupees 5,500 is entirely borne by the [British] Government. This has allowed the closing of the Roman Catholic Cemetery attached to St. Anthony's Church in Saint Thome."
Once exclusively used for British burials, the cemetery was opened to the public after the end of British rule in India, and is now nearly at capacity.
Angilican burials took place at St. Mary's Church, but after about 1863, the cemetery at Quibble Island appears to have been the only place for Christian burials in Mylapore, (the single exception being the Madras War Cemetery, exclusively for WWII veterans, which is located in nearby Nandambakkam, Chennai).
