Buried in this cemetery are 386 forced laborers from all over Europe, who were murdered by the Nazi regime near the end of the second World War in Hannover.
Among them are 154 persons from the former Soviet Union, who were victims of a mass execution on April 6, 1945 at Stadtfriedhof Seelhorst, four days before the US Army entered the city.
On May 2, 1945, the British and American military officials ordered the exhumation from the mass graves at Seelhorst and a dignified burial at a spot at the north end of the Maschsee Lake in the center of the city. The former Nazi government officials were ordered to disinter the remains and the citizens of Hannover ordered to line the streets for the procession to this cemetery of honor.
Only six of these victims could be identified. Also at this time 232 additional forced laborers were exhumed and re-interred at this new cemetery. At the location of the mass executions in Seelhorst there is now a monument to these victims.
The date 8 April 1945 which was inscribed on the main monument that same year is a mistake; it has since been found by historians to have been 6 April 1945.
A smaller number of uninscribed stones in the shape of a cross throughout the cemetery symbolize the 386 interments.
