|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is located on Route 16 in Piasa, Macoupin, Illinois in the Shipman Township. The Cemetery is behind the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist church. It dates back to 1851 at which time land was donated for the church AND cemetery.
The tall monument in center of the cemetery was erected in honor of Civil War soldiers. The dedication plaque reads: "Erected by N. B. Buford Post, No. 246 in memory of the unlocated dead who enlisted from the vicinity of Piasa & whose names are inscribed on this monument." The map I have of the cemetery layout refers to the obelisk as 'Union Soldiers Memorial'.
Names inscribed on the monument are: John Hale, Co. E, 7 Ill Inf.; J. P. Clark, Co. G, 66 Ill Inf.; Hiram Andrews, Co. F, 7 Ill Inf.; Henry Robings, Co. F, 7 Ill Inf.; Wm. McKendree, Peter Co. G, 66 Ill Inf; Hugh Porter, Co. F, 7 Ill Inf.; John Darr, Co. H, 88 Ill. Inf.; Henry Cramp, Co. G, 66 Ill Inf.
