|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This is the second oldest cemetery in Brookfield and until recently was on private land and inaccessible for many years. The Town of Brookfield recently bought property and on this land is what remains of Merwins Brook Cemetery.
There was no inventory of this cemetery by the Hale Collection readers (in 1934) because it was inaccessible and/or they could not find it. Emily Hawley an early Brookfield historian also had no access. Her notes say the owner build a barn(1929) on the cemetery.
The gravestones for this cemetery were recorded by the "Old South Cemetery Association" in 1986 using the reference from Emily Hawley's Annals of Brookfield. The accuracy of this inventory is questionable. It would be wise to also check other cemeteries in Brookfield to see if a gravestone for them is in fact located in another local cemetery. Just not sure if the body went with the gravestone.
See: Annals of Brookfield, by Emily Hawley 1929, pages 237-8 for a complete description.
