Cemetery notes and/or description:
The Antioch Baptist Church and Cemetery are at the Tunnel Springs community on CR-42 in Monroe County, Alabama. To reach Tunnel Springs start your journey in Monroeville by following State Hwy-21/47 northward toward the town of Beatrice. Leaving Monroeville one passes through the community of Peterman and the former Georgia-Pacific plywood mill, or approximately midway between Monroeville and Beatrice. CR-42 crosses Hwy-21/47 at about 6 miles north of Monroeville. Turn right onto 42 (east) and go another 1.5 miles. The signs point to the right. Drive up a slight incline to a large parking area. The gates to the cemetery will be on the right. The cemetery is spread over considerable acreage with family groups scattered among the oak and pine trees. The older portion of the cemetery is hidden in a low valley that extends along a south ridge. Among the trees and underbrush are numerous graves that are unmarked, aside from slabs and head markers denoting a burial site.

The African-American Antioch Baptist Church had its beginning in the 1880's in a little cedar grove about one mile from its present church. At that time, it was attended by white people only and was named the Philadelphia Baptist Church. The Antioch Baptist Church emerged from the Mars Hill Baptist Church to this little cedar grove. Members of the congregation were successful in their effort of improving the church, and the membership grew to about 50. With such heavy attendance the Pastor and Deacons felt they needed a larger place to worship. And so it followed that in 1894 the church officials were able to purchase two pieces of land from the local white folks for the hefty sum of $200. The white people of the Philadelphia Baptist Church then moved to another church carrying the name of Philadelphia Baptist Church with them, thus Antioch Baptist Church was founded and so named.
