Heartland Home Cemetery
Also known as Ashland County Home Cemetery
Hayesville, Ashland County, Ohio, USA
The Ashland County Home Cemetery located in Vermillion Township NE 1/4 Scction 3; North side of CR 1754, just E of juntion with SR 60, which has been used as a cemetery since Pioneer Days of Ashland County.
One if the first projects of the Altrusa Club of Ashland Internation Inc., after receiving its Charter in 1947, decided to do was improve the appearance of Ashland County Home Cemetery. For many years it had looked like a dumping ground, and grown up with briars and weeds. Only 2 marked graves were found even then an estimated 500 persons had been buried there.
In the spring of 1950 work was begun on improvement of the cemetery and 13 graves were identified for which the Altrusa Club placed grave markers. May 30, 1951, the Altrusa Club held the first Memorial service and each year on Memorial Day the Club places flowers in the 2 large urns. In 1953 the Club undertook grading and seeding. During summer of 1955 a permanent planting of evergreens was made.
This project has been a continuing one and grave markers have been supplied occasionally by a family or friends, as Mr. and Mrs. Robert Huffman furnished one in 1977, otherwise they are provided by The Altrusa Club. This year 1979 we plan to provide 3 more markers for those buried there during 1978. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Bowles, the present Superintendents, since they have been superintendents, have edged the markers, as well as kept the ground mowed and grass swept off the markers, and obtained a flag pole.
The ladies of the American Legion, the last few years have conducted memorial services, inviting those able to attend from the home. There are now 40 marked graves. Mr. Lewis Holmes first made the cement block to put the markers in, now the present owners of the Ashland Vault, Mr. Edward Loughridge & Mr. Henry Slarb have made the cement footers the last 2 years. We have been able to purchase the name markers from The Fickes Funeral Home of Jeromesville, Ohio. There are 5 known veterans buried in this cemetery.
