Cemetery notes and/or description:
This cemetery is owned and maintained by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow whose office is at the Diocesan Office, Clyde Street, Glasgow. There are actually two separate cemeteries beside each other; the original Old Dalbeth Cemetery which is the smaller, and St Peter's Cemetery, which is huge, well maintained and is still in use. But even locals are often confused when referring to Dalbeth Cemetery when they actually mean St Peter's. It is possible to walk through the old cemetery and recent efforts have been made to rectify years of neglect. St Peter's Catholic Cemetery was opened in 1863 and there are distinctive Polish and Italian parts of the cemetery, and many locally famous Catholics are buried there. Pictured at the right is one of the Common Burial Grounds that has been there for many years and is still beautifully maintained. St Peter's has been gradually enlarged through the years. Originally it was sited only to the east of the burn, but now covers both sides up to the boundary with the bottling plant. The cemetery is open to all demonimations. (text by Geoffrey Gillon)
