Rev. Daniel W Townsend, an earnest, active worker in all humane and Christian enterprises, is the honored and respected pastor of Unity Presbyterian church around which cling the memories of Revolutionary days and early pioneer times.

He was born in Washington township, Westmoreland county, Pa., April 29, 1834 and is a son of John and Elizabeth (Shumaker) Townsend. John Townsend was born in Westmoreland county in 1786. His life-long occupation was farming which he followed in Washington township.

Rev. Daniel W Townsend was prepared for college at Elders Ridge academy, which he entered at the age of fifteen years. He entered Washington college in 1851, remained one year and then went to Jefferson college, from which he was graduated in 1855. He then prepared himself for the ministry at the Western Theological seminary from which he was graduated in 1858. He was licensed to preach in 1857 and in the succeeding year was ordained and installed pastor of the Presbyterian church at Parnassus, which he faithfully served for a period of nine years. From Parnassus he removed to Alliance, Ohio, where his pastorate lasted two years and which he resigned in order to accept a call from Unity Presbyterian Church, which he served successfully for 21 years.

On the first day of July 1858, Rev. D W Townsend united in marriage with Elizabeth M Kier, a teacher in Glad Run academy and a daughter of James and Hannah Kier, of Elders Ridge, Armstrong county.

Rev D W was stated clerk of the Salsburg Presbytery for six years and served the Blairsville Presbytery in that capacity for more than 18 years. He is a man of fine personal appearance, a theologian of sound doctrinal views and an earnest and convincing speaker.
