Lydia was the first of ten children born to Henry and Nancy (Filler) Snoots. When she was about four, the family moved from Virginia to Adams Township, Muskingum Co., Ohio. On June 14, 1849, Lydia married schoolteacher and farmer Stiles Jackson Hanks. She gave birth to these children: Henry, Amy, Ella, Jane, Homer, Addison, William and Riley. Lydia died from childbirth complications two days after Riley was born. Lydia was survived by her husband, parents, six of her eight children, and her siblings Jacob "Add", John, William and George Snoots of Ohio, Sarah Geller and Amanda Tingle of Ohio, Mary Blair of Kansas and Emily Bainter of Illinois. Lydia is buried with the two children who predeceased her-Amy in 1862 and Homer in 1864. After Lydia's death, Stiles remarried and the family went west, at one point living in Kansas, not far from where Lydia's sister Mary lived. He died in 1900 in Jackson County, Missouri. The children eventually scattered and have been difficult to locate, except youngest son Riley, who passed away in Oklahoma City in 1944.
