Walter went by Dobie. He was the son of Moses Monroe and Sarah Elizabeth (Hodges) Widner. He was engaged to Ruby Criss but she died of pnemonia before they were married. This was in 1907 and he moved around the country for the next several years before ending up in Arkansas where he married Sehrena May Long on April 20, 1919 in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Grandpa was 35 and Grandma was 16 when they got married. They were married for 51 years and had 10 children. Three of the children died as babies. Little Sis, John Henry and Charley Newton.
Grandpa and Grandma traveled from Mountain Home, Arkansas to his homestead in New Mexico in a covered wagon in the spring of 1921 with an infant son and Grandma pregnant. Grandpa had homesteaded on a 1/4 section of land in Eastern New Mexico sometime around 1907. I guess this is where he headed after the funeral of Ruby. This is where they lived until 1961 when they moved to town. They raised seven children in an adobe house that grandpa built mostly by himself. They raised broom corn as the cash crop. Mom still talks about how awful a job that was.
It was nearly 75 years after Charley Newton died before another child, Rutherford, would pass away. Rutherford R was the fifth child born to Grandpa and Grandma. Dick was the oldest child.
