A much loved and gentle father and grandfather. He was a fun loving, religious, family oriented man who lived his entire life in northern West Virginia, where he worked in the coal mining industry. A grand old gentleman and a staunch Republican with a dislike for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As a child, on hot summer days we children knew that we could always get a dime from him to buy a few Popsicles. All that this required was that as we were sitting near him, we would scrunch up our noses, and announce that we smelled something bad. He would sniff the air himself, and agree that he too smelled something bad, and that he knew what it was. He would then reach into his pocket and bring out his pocket change, then sifting through his change would announce that he had found the source of the odor, "one of those 'stinking Roosevelt dimes'. How did that get in my pocket? Here, you kids take this thing, and get rid of it for me". Of course we were happy to oblige him by taking that "stinking dime" and running to the nearby store for our treats. We were happy, and he was happy to have made us happy.
Now, sixty plus years later, fond memories of a nice old man, my paternal Grandfather.
