Jake Gilman

CAMAS, Wash. -- At the age of 18, Jake Gilman hopped in his aging pickup and drove from this Clark County town to central Idaho. He had no plan, no leads for a job, nothing but a want for adventure, said his stepfather, Ron Martindale.

He ended up working for a hunting and fishing guide, setting up tents, cooking meals, loading pack animals and taking clients into the Sawtooth Mountains.

"He was never satisfied staying put," Martindale said.

About a month ago, that wanderlust took him to Alaska.

Gilman, 22, died Wednesday when the fishing boat he was aboard sank in frigid Bering Sea waters.

"He just said, 'I want to do this,'" Martindale said Friday afternoon during a phone interview from Anchorage, where he waited for Gilman's body to arrive. "His mom was not happy about him going fishing. I had some concerns, but I thought it would be an adventure."

Martindale works for an oil contractor in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, traveling home to Camas every two weeks. The fishing industry's safety record had been pretty good lately, he said. "If we had glasses that allowed us to look forward, we wouldn't do a lot of things."

Gilman graduated from Camas High School in 2004. Admissions secretary Barb Voogt remembered his quick smile and friendly nature.

"He was just a good kid," she said. "He was happy-go-lucky."

The teenager played a game of cat and mouse with Voogt, who handled suspensions and attendance at the time. The school didn't allow students to leave campus for lunch, but Gilman lived close by and would sneak home. She tried to catch him.

"He was fun," she said, adding that he never got into serious trouble at school.

According to records in Oregon and Washington, Gilman didn't even have a speeding ticket.

He had been working for a roofing company in Camas before he left for Alaska. His stepfather said part of the lure of working on a fishing boat was the money.

Funeral services are pending with Brown's Funeral Home in Camas.

Jake is preceded in death by his Great Grandparents Dossie and Edith Bates, Great Aunt Mary Jo Batten and Great Uncle Eddie Bates.
