After Bernhard's death in 1901, Emilie applied for and was granted a widow's pension of $12.00, based on Bernhard's Civil War service. Emilie Stein was rather tall and thin, and when she went any place she always went by horse and buggy. She had a white horse of her own and called it Frank. In the Peace Valley/White Church area, she was known as "Tante Stein," the German equivalent of Aunt Stein. At the end of her life she lived with, in succession, two of her daughters and finally her sister.
