Marine Sgt. Carbonaro was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Carbonaro died at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, after being severely burned May 1 when a roadside bomb exploded near his humvee while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Alex grew up near downtown Bethesda, Maryland, the only child of Gilda and Fulvio Carbonaro, a native of Italy. Even as a young boy, he hated seeing other kids picked on and would come to their rescue. He graduated from Sandy Spring Friends School in 1997. He enjoyed ice hockey and in his spare time, he and his friends played local shows in a basement rock band with Alex on guitar before he deployed. In 1998, he joined the Marines and four years later, while home on holiday, he met his wife-to-be, Gilda – it was love at first sight. This was his second tour of duty in Iraq. On his first tour in 2004, Alex suffered a foot injury from an explosive device in Fallujah and received a Purple Heart. On May 28, 2005 he and Gilda married. By that time his priorities had changed. He was planning to get out of the Marine Corps by the end of next year. The couple wanted to live either in Georgia near her parents or in the Washington area near his parents. They wanted to raise children, travel and have long Sunday dinners with their parents. He returned to Iraq in March 2006. Alex was a reconnaissance Marine with numerous medals and commendations. He was dedicated, extremely honest and totally committed to serving his country. Doctors at the hospital were deeply moved by Alex and are planting a tree in a park near the hospital in his memory. Alex died 18 days before his first wedding anniversary surrounded by his mom, dad, mother-in-law, and wife – they held him in their arms until he took his last breath.
