*** Chief of Police ***

I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Bell when I worked as a civilian employee for the Issaquah (WA) Police Department. One of my volunteer activities was researching the history of law enforcement for that town.

I was researching the former Town Marshals and Chiefs of Police, when I came across Paul's name. I found him in the city directory and we met. What a man he was! Full of life and stories going back to the 1920s.

I sat in with a reporter from the Issaquah Press around 2002, or so, when he interviewed Paul.

The paper later ran a full page spread about Paul and his life experiences. When it came out, he was the talk of the Bellewood Retirement Apartments in Issaquah, WA., where he lived.

Paul was the son of Raymond and Leona Bell. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister. Valeria, his former wife of 59 years, passed away in 1996.

In 1929 at the age of 17, Paul joined the Navy. He served on the Battleship, USS Colorado for 6 years, where he learned barbering, among other things. While serving, he crossed the Equator several times and received a certificate as a Shellback.

After leaving the Navy around 1935, Paul lived in Kirkland, WA and purchased a barber shop. In 1937 he was appointed to the King County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Sheriff and was assigned to the eastside of the county.

Paul was called back to the Navy in 1941 when the Japanese Attacked Pearl Harbor. He told me that he was assigned to an Advance Base Unit Hospital in New Guinea, where he remained until the war ended in 1945, when he was discharged.

Returning to the United States, Paul joined the Kirkland Police Department and in 1957 was appointed Chief of Police of Issaquah.

Paul was past commander and life member of the VFW; Past commander of American Legion; Former member of The Kirkland Kiwanis Club, Kirkland Chamber, Kirkland Eagles, Elks and several law enforcement organizations.

In 2000, Paul met his future wife, Betty and they were married March 31, 2001.

Paul's Inurnment Service was held on Saturday, Oct. 20th at 12:30 p.m. at the Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue.

His obituary was published in The Seattle Times on Oct. 16, 2007

Paul was my friend, a fellow veteran and a gentle man.
