George served in the United States Army during WWII as a member of Company A, 192nd Tank Battalion "The Janesville 99". He was one of four members of this group who survived capture by the Japanese Army. He was the only one who did not surrender. He had fled into the Philippine hills along with 24 other men including Philippine scouts. During the next three years, he worked with them gathering intelligence on the enemy troops. He was listed as missing in action the whole time. He also served in the Korean Conflict and retired from the service in 1963. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantrymans Badge, and the American Campaign Medal. Following his career in the military, George was employed at various places including: Fairbanks Morse, Gibbs Manufacturing and he retired from The University of Wisconsin-Rock County Campus.
