Harry Walter Spiegelberg, devoted husband and loving father, died on June 10, 2007, at Mission Ridge Retirement Community in Billings, MT. He was 88 years old. His wife Jennie was close by his side in his final hours.

Harry was born May 21, 1919, in Beach, ND, the son of Ferdinand and Adeline (Ketchum) Spiegelberg. He grew up in Beach, graduated from Beach High School in 1938 and worked as a postal clerk while farming with his father.

When the draft began in 1941, Harry and several of his friends gathered 'round the radio to wait for their draft numbers to be drawn. Harry "won" the lottery and the $5 pool when his number was drawn first. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in September 1941. He served honorably, rising to the rank of sergeant in the Coast Artillery.

Harry met his future wife Jennie Lucille Lambert, while home on furlough in 1943. Two furloughs and many letters later, they eloped on Dec. 2, 1944. After the war, Harry returned to Beach to help his father farm and to work at the Post Office. In 1957, he accepted a position as a rural letter carrier, delivering mail to patrons on area farms. He loved the route and strove to deliver mail every day, no matter the roads or weather. When patrons were snowed in, he offered to pick up necessities and bring them with the mail. Harry could be seen delivering mail in his pickup, his Jeep or on his snowmobile. He retired from the Postal Service in 1979 after 40 years of devoted service.

Harry farmed most of his life, raising wheat, oats and barley. He implemented the latest conservation techniques including strip and contour farming, shelter belts, tree rows, waterways, terracing and crop rotation. The Spiegelberg farm was recognized as the 1977 Farm of the Year for Soil Conservation practices in Golden Valley County, ND.

After retiring from farming, Harry joined several Beach businessmen to bring cable TV to Beach and Belfield, ND. In retirement, Harry and Jennie served as ambulance emergency medical technicians, and taught first aid and CPR to other volunteers. Harry was active in the American Legion, Lions, XGI Drill Team, Tracy Mountain Woodcarvers, Boy Scouts and church. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, hiking in the Badlands and family time. Harry was an accomplished woodcarver and attended many classes and workshops with his wife, until their eyesight began to fail.

Harry was devoted to Jennie, his wife of 62 years. They considered "Forever" their special poem and recited it together every evening.

Harry and Jennie moved to Mission Ridge Retirement Community, Billings, MT, in 1999. The Mission Ridge residents called them "the love birds" because of their obvious affection for each other. They became members of Rimrock Baptist Church, where Harry was baptized by immersion at the age of 82. His favorite Bible verses were John 3:16 and Galatians 5:22-23. Harry volunteered at Billings Deaconess Hospital until shortly before his death.

He was the proud father of four children: Sue Weinreis, Dan Spiegelberg, Sally Krueger, and Dave Spiegelberg. He valued higher education and ensured that each obtained a college education.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth Nelson and Marie Langenes; and two sons-in-law, Howard Krueger and Dr. Robert Weinreis. He leaves behind his wife, four children, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his sister Margaret Brengle, and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and shirt-tail relatives.
