Hilda Ellen (Border) Selby, daughter of Henry Isaiah and Emma Mary (Edwards) Border; wife of Alfred Theodore Selby; mother of Gloria Mae (Selby) Velasquez.

Hilda was born in Crossville TN, then at a young age her family moved to Darke Co., Ohio, then settled in Connersville, Indiana. Hilda and her 6 brothers and sisters were all musically talented, each one playing at least 2 instruments. Hilda played flute, clarinet and saxophone, and often played with her siblings in local dance bands. In addition, she loved singing, and had a beautiful alto voice.

Hilda and Alfred were married 8 Sep 1925, and their daughter Gloria was born 30 Jul 1928.

Hilda worked various jobs, including factory work during WWII, one of the many "Rosie the Riveters" of her time. Even during the depression, Hilda and Alfred were able to provide the necessities of life for their family, helped by the fact that Hilda was a very talented seamstress, creating "new" clothes by restoring old hand-me-downs.

In her family, Hilda would always be known as "Nana", and always set an example of strength and dignity that still inspires her family to this day.

I place this memorial in honor of this wonderful woman, whose title of "Nana" I humbly inherited when my own grandchildren were born. Each time I hear that name, I immediately remember this dear woman who helped to raise me and my brother, and who lovingly taught me to play the flute, to sing, and virtually everything that I enjoy to this day!

I love you Nana, and miss you everyday.
