Major U.D. Coy moved to Fremont County in 1868. He had been in the Black Hawk and Mexican wars where he became a Major. He was also in the Union Army, but was sent home due to his age. He sold 160 acres of his land to the railroad for a town. Major Coy was an admirer of Admiral Farragut, so named the town after his hero. Major Coy gave the first plot of land for the Farragut Cemetery with the reservation that a Coy always be on the Board of Trustees. The deed was signed 13 Dec 1873 and filed in the Fremont County Recorder's Office on 1 May 1877. Major U.D. Coy died in 1876 and his wife Susan died in 1884. Both of these pioneers are buried in the cemetery which they began.
