Located West of Manchester, Iowa. Clement and Susan Coffin brought their five children across the Mississippi by covered wagon in 1839. They moved into an 8 ft. by 8 ft. cabin formerly inhabited by fur traders in the territory just purchased from the Indians. Henry Baker and Elizabeth Coffin, the daughter of Clement and Susan, were married on Tuesday; June 2 1840 and the next year Henry Baker joined his father in law and settled with Elizabeth Baker on a bend of Coffins Creek in a grove of black walnut and Burr Oak trees. Henry Baker began purchasing land in the area and eventually owned a 700 acre farm in Coffin's Grove Township (4½ miles NE of Manchester) Iowa. He began purchasing land in 1841, mainly from the United States Government, and added to his holdings during the 1850s. He contributed two acres of his land for the Baker Cemetery (aka Coffins Grove Cemetery), thus establishing: Coffin's Grove-Baker Cemetery which is now abandoned.
