"The second cemetery was a gift to the town in 1768; the donation being made by Deacon Matthew Norton, "in consideration of the love, good will and regard that he hath toward the public worship of almighty God." It was an acre in extent, and was situated on Pease Point Way, adjoining the lot on which the then new meeting house was being erected. It has since been enlarged by subsequent acquisitions. The first burials were in 1782, when six men of Edgartown, drowned at Gay Head, were interred in the new ground." --- The History of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts by Charles Edward Banks.
