Wayland's second oldest cemetery, the South Cemetery (aka Centre Cemetery) dates to 1835, at the time that East Sudbury changed it name to Wayland. Located close to the center of town it was situated to be close to the First Parish Church.



This 1.4 acre property contains ca. 100 stones that reflect 19th century funerary motifs, and is the final resting place for members of Wayland's oldest families. The plot is bordered on all sides by a stone wall, and its entrance is flanked with arched granite posts.



This cemetery sits on 1.4 acres. The earliest death date is 1835. Several burials have occurred in the 1990s, with a few newer, however no additional lots are being sold in this cemetery.



The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as WAY.801 South Cemetery.



This cemetery is referred to as GR2 Center Cemetery in the "Vital Records of Wayland Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849".
