In 1841, a committee was chosen to select a piece of ground for a burying place to serve North Chelmsford. Land was purchased from Benjamin Blood and Samuel F. Wood between North Chelmsford and Middlesex Village to create Riverside Cemetery. Most family lots in the original section were sold by the end of the 19th century.

The cemetery was expanded to its current size in 1890 when the town acquired an adjacent parcel to the west and laid out additional lots in this relatively level area. While family lots predominate in both the old and the new sections, there is a single grave section in the northwest corner and a paupers lot nearby. The names on the burial markers reveal a largely Anglo-Saxon population, as Chelmsford did not have large mills to attract the immigrant population that flocked to many communities along the Merrimack River.

The cemetery sits on 3.84 acres. There are approximately 700 stones and two tombs with death dates ranging from the mid 19th century to the late 20th century. The cemetery is not accepting any new burials.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as CLM.802 Riverside Cemetery.

This cemetery is referred to as GR3 Riverside Cemetery in the "Vital Records of Chelmsford Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849."
