This is a privately-owned cemetery. This cemetery is non-sectarian and is owned and operated by the First Parish Cemetery Association. It was established in the early 1700s and was preceded by the Second Parish Cemetery.
The name reflects the history of the town. The area was once the Second Parish of Scituate. In 1849, the new town was named "South Scituate". In 1888, the town changed the name to Norwell. Both times the cemetery and the church updated their names, reflecting the changes within the community.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as NRW800.
This burial place is referenced to in the book "Vital Records of Scituate, Massachusetts to 1850", Published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, as G.R.14. The town of Norwell, originally named "South Scituate" but renamed in 1888, separated from the town of Scituate in 1849.
This burial place is referenced to in the book "Old Cemeteries of Southeastern Massachusetts" by Charles M Thatcher as "Cemetery at Norwell Center".
