Historical information on this cemetery is scarce but it was probably established by the City in the mid-nineteenth century when the older cemeteries located closer to town were beginning to fill up. It was heavily used during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its proximity to the Addison Gilbert Hospital was convenient during times of epidemic when large numbers of bodies were reportedly buried in a common grave.
According to the Historic Society the cemetery sits on 2.86 acres and the earliest death date appears to be 1843.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as GLO.814 Cherry Hill Cemetery.
This cemetery is referred to as GR11 Cherry Hill Cemetery in the "Vital Records of Gloucester Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849".
