Although the official address is Bridge Street, the only open gate is located on Parsons Street. Roadways are a combination of pavement, dirt and grass. Only the newer part is plowed during the winter.
In 1662, the residents of Northampton voted that no more burials would occur next to the Meeting House and officially designated Bridge Street as the town cemetery. In 1680, the town moved the Meeting House remains to Bridge Street. In 1662, the cemetery occupied 10 acres; today it is 20 acres. The oldest surviving stone is Captain Elisha Grey, who died May 8, 1685.
Thomas Bridgman transcribed and published in 1850 "Inscriptions on the Grave Stones in the Grave Yards of Northampton, and of other Towns in the Valley of the Connecticut as Springfield, Amherst, Hadley, Hatfield, Deerfield, etc. with Brief Annals of Northampton". Bridgman noted that markers were becoming illegible.
Walter Corbin transcribed Bridge Street in 1953. NEHGS holds the original Corbin Collection. "Inscriptions from Bridge Street Cemetery, 1656-1953" is available on the Picton Press CD "The Corbin Collection, Volume 1, Records of Hampshire County, Massachusetts edited by Robert J Dunkle".
A walking tour brochure and map is available from Historic Northampton at 46 Bridge Street. Historic Northampton has an 11" X 14" copy of Corbin's plot layout + an alphabetical listing of plots with Corbin's assigned plot number available. The plot map only lists plot number and the print is itty-bitty. An original Corbin plot map is available at Forbes Library, Northampton.
