St. John's Lutheran Parish Cemetery was established in 1866. Many peple were buried before printed records were kept. Their names were to have been recorded in Volume I of the church records, but some were omitted. There was a fire in 1918 and an written cemetery records that existed at that time were lost. A church member, Fred Steinke, became the sexton of the cemetery and he began another written record starting with his service.
In 1973, Leona (Mrs. John) Eberhardt and her son Gordon and his wife Arlene made a written record of all of the monuments that were in the cemetery at the time. Some of the gravestones had fallen over and were thrown on a pile. Some were also very difficult or impossible to read. Some graves did not have a marker.
In 1976, Leona and her daughter, Sue Alft, recorded all the names and information from each monument including dates and relationships. All names were written in a book and also on a typewritten, index-card file. The following year Leona and Sue translated the German and copied all the information that they could from Volume I and completed the records. In 1980, they also copied names from Volume II that had no markers. They also checked death records at the local court houses to determine other burials that were not listed in the church record books. As of December 31, 1989 there had been 625 definite burials at the cemetery.
In January 2004, Sue prepared a detailed map of the entire cemetery including each burial. Some monuments which had been standing previously were already gone. As of January 1, 2006, there have been 693 burials.
